After a sharp dip seen in March, the domestic box office regained momentum with gross collections of ₹825 crore at the domestic box office, according to latest data released by Ormax Media. This was nearly 41 per cent higher than March (₹581 crore) and includes projected collections of April releases. Four films released in April grossed ₹100 crore, a month in which Malayalam films saw strong performance.
Good Bad Ugly starring Ajith Kumar emerged as the top film of the month, grossing over ₹180 crore and was also the highest grossing Tamil film of the year so far. Mohanlal’s Thudarum, grossed almost ₹150 crore. Since Thudarum’s Tamil version released in May 2025, only the Malayalam & Telugu language box office for the film have been considered in this report. Hindi movies Kesari Chapter-2 and Jaat also crossed the Rs 100 crore-mark in terms of gross collections at the doemstic box office.
“The cumulative box office for January-April releases in 2025 stands at ₹3,691 Cr, which is 19 per cent higher compared to the same period in 2024,” the monthly report by Ormax Media noted.
Malayalam cinema grossed over ₹225 crore April 2025, making it the second month of all time for the language, after February 2024. “With four Malayalam films in this month’s Top 10 highest-grossing films (Thudarum, Alappuzha Gymkhana, Maranamass & Bazooka), April 2025 has turned out to be a strong month for Malayalam Cinema,” the report added.
While Hindi cinema contributed 39 per cent share to the April domestic box office collections, while Telugu cinema contributed 22 per cent share. Tamil films and Malayalam films contributed 17 per cent and 13 per cent respectively to overall domestic gross collections.
In the January-April period, Chaava, Sankranthiki Vasthunam and Good Bad Ugly have emerged as the top three grossers at the Indian box office, it added.
