Metal stocks were hit hard among all the indices that traded in the negative territory on Monday. All Nifty 50 components traded in red. Trent Ltd traded as the major laggard, followed by Tata Steel, Shriram Finance, JSW Steel and Tata Motors.
Sensex plummeted 3282.85 pts or 4.36 per cent to 72,081.84 as at 12.33 pm, and Nifty 50 depreciated 1,069.85 pts or 4.67 per cent to 21,834.60.
Nifty smallcap 100 fell 5.43 per cent to 14,825.30 and Nifty midcap 100 declined 4.55 per cent to 48,341.75.
On the sectoral front, Nifty Metal index plunged 8.20 per cent to ₹7,724.45. Realty, auto, IT, banking stocks and oil & gas depreciated over 5 per cent.
Only 139 stocks advanced on the National Stock Exchange as at 12.40 pm of all the 2,875 stocks that were traded. Nearly 2,685 stocks declined.
Bajaj Auto, Trent, Dabur, Reliance Industries, Cyient and TVS Srichakra were among the 638 stocks that hit 52-week lows.
All Tata Group stocks plunged with Trent shares experiencing sharp sell-off. It traded at ₹4,655.30, crashing 16.31 per cent as at 12.43 pm.
Tata Steel tumbled 9.03 per cent to ₹127.71 and Tata Motors slumped 8.01 per cent to ₹564.70.
NBFC major Shriram Finance fell 8.90 per cent to ₹595.40 and JSW Steel depreciated 9.08 per cent to ₹914.45.
Siemens stock hit upper circuit today, after opening at its 52-week low of ₹2,450 on the ex-date for spin-off of its energy business into a new entity - Siemens Energy India.
Among the Nifty midcap 100 stocks, only GMR Airports and Hindustan Petroleum traded in positive territory. Shares of Mazagon Dock, National Aluminium, Vodafone Idea, BDL and Bharat Forge tumbled 8-9 per cent.
On the BSE, shares of Siemens rallied 11 per cent, and Delhivery and GMR Airports were up 1 per cent.
